Moses 'High'

“Moses might have been ‘high’ on Mt. Sinai” screamed a newspaper article. That really caught my attention. I cannot imagine the leader of the biblical Israelites a drug user.

A study by an Israeli psychology professor by the name of Benny Shannon said that the Israelites who were with Moses at the dessert might have bee all ‘high’ when Moses took the 10 Commandments. Shannon said the plants in the Sinai dessert “contained the same molecules as those found in plants from which the powerful Amazonian hallucinogenic brew ayahuasca is prepared”.

The burning bush of Moses, the thunder and lightning effects could have been just imaginings of the Israelites in their delirious state Shannon stated. He claimed to have experienced the same effect when he tried the ayahuasca plant on numerous occasions.

In advanced forms of ayahuasca inebriation, the seeing of light is accompanied by profound religious and spiritual feelings. As far as Moses on Mount Sinai is concerned, it was either a supernatural cosmic event, which I don’t believe or a legend, which I don’t believe either or finally, and this is very probable, an event that joined Moses and the people of Israel under the effect of narcotics. This was the statement given to Israel Radio by Mr. Shannon.

If we were to believe Mr. Shannon, then the whole Bible would be a lie. All the miracles and spectacular events were to be considered hallucinations of addicts! The Bible would be likened to a book of fairy tales and legends and tall tales.

Rabbi Yuval Shalow commented on Israel Radio: The Bible is trying to convey a very profound event. We have to fear for not for the fate of the biblical Moses but for the fate of science.

Amen!

Nice read :) Hmm, I have my doubts on the statements of Benny Shannon. For one, he is a researcher who studies ayahuasca. It may be the case that, well, he has lost a portion of his sensibilities precisely because of his frequent 'encounters' with ayahuasca.

He may have an argument from his research, but to prove any of his arguments is another thing.

Well, what i can say is, it takes faith to believe in either... So he can choose to believe in that and i choose to believe in this...
